The checks must be in US funds or we can not accept them. We went to our bank and discussed how inconvenient this was for our Canadian visitors. As a result they figured out on their end how to help us make this work. We hope that this helps make your visit a little less stressful and will encourage more Canadian tourists to visit.

Thank you for your continued support.
David Muench

mardi gras fun

building a landmark

My Daughter Madelyn Muench had an assignment for world geography to build a land mark in London. Sami as always was wonderful in helping to give them time outside on Wednesday & putting them back in for Wednesday night. Thursday we put them outside & cleaned all 20 cages. Claire was a great help as well. G.W. from Jerry's was a terrific bird letting me trim his toenails & clip his wings. Caesar from Jerry's was, as usual, a menace & extremely noisy. Miss Libby will be away on a cruise from January 7-17 so drop by & say hello to the parrots as there will be no show for 10 days.

water shut off on tuesday, january 3

Dear Park Residents,

On Tuesday 1-3-12 between 9am and 11am the water will be shut off on streets 5E, 6E & 6W. The parade was always organized by the Park residents and the Park provided the picnic. In past years a committee was formed to work out all the parade details. A new committee will need to be formed and a chairperson or Co-Chairs will need to contact me to arrange for this event.

We intend to have the picnic on Fat Tuesday, February 21, 2012 even if a parade is not happening this year. This has been a good trailer for us. So good in fact we are not considering anything other than another Sunline to replace it. It is 17 years old though so there are some good and some bad points.

The Good points:
Everything works: Hot water heater (Gas), Heater (Gas), Oven and cooktop (4 burner – Gonna miss that), Range hood, Microwave, Air conditioning (Ducted), Electrical, all lights, Brakes, Holding Tanks, all faucets, inside and outside showers, and toilet.
Huge bathroom! Full glass walled shower!
Easy to tow: Tow-able by most half-ton vehicles but NOT ALL! There are a lot of SUVs out there with low axle gear ratios and no transmission cooling. If you are unsure whether your vehicle can pull it, ask me by email. Trailer is about 4500lbs with a tongue weight of 720lbs dry with no options. Sunlines are slung low for less wind resistance.
13500 BTU AC will turn on with no trouble on a 3500watt cheap Chinese generator even with the electric fridge and lights on.

Some may consider it a good thing others not but the original fridge was replaced by the previous owner with a standard electric fridge. We replaced that one with another of the same less than a year ago. The good is it gets colder faster than a typical RV fridge. The bad is, it will not run off propane or battery.
There is a soft spot under the bathroom vanity. The previous owner was not nice enough to let us know that the shower leaked. A generous application of sillicon sealant solved the leak problem but the soft area is still there. It was on my list of projects but it could either be fixed or let stay as is. The vanity covers it and I could find no mold inspecting through the rear storage compartment.
The vent fan in the bathroom is broken.
I spot resealed all the roof caulking but one day it is really going to need to be re-caulked. I put silicon over all the cracking Dicor with care not to touch the roof membrane.
The awning is going to have to be replaced pretty soon or re-tensioned at the least.

Call 352-600-8028

creating a shell fashion for Shellabration

------------------------------------------
Could you see if your friends or your customers at Periwinkle Park could make a shell fashion for Shellabration in late Feb? In the past the people of Periwinkle Park have been great supporters of the Community House and this might be a fun project. This can be a store bought garment enhanced with shells and the winner does get $500. What fun for a group to do together. The Shellcrafters will help drill the holes in the shells so they can be easily attached to the fashion.

Just get a note or a sketch to us by mid-Dec so we can get many entries grouped together. Then the fun can start, culminating in the Fashion Show in late Feb.

Thanks.
Marge

Marge Meek
President, The Sanibel Community Association
(239) 472-2466
mmeek1640@comcast.net

landscaping around your unit ~~ using native plants

-------------------------------------------
Here's a link to the SCCF native plant nursery price list ~ great prices! He had had some sort of stroke or
seizure in August but under Dawn's care in the breedery, seemed fine at the
end of October.
The vet could find no sign of any remaining stroke symptoms.
Now he is in heaven as he gets to have all his favorite (fatty) foods. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign the concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations.

As cell (mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Periwinkle Park's Mardis Gras Celebration

Mark your calendars...
We welcome you all back to your small community
and hope that you all had a wonderful Summer.

As a community, we need to be mindful of our neighbors
and obey all the Park rules which are for the good of everybody. After the long FAST driving on the interstates, we forget what 7 1/2
feels like. It is VERY S L O W (just a crawl) and slowing down here is VERY important. Please pay attention and keep the speedometer way below 10, just over 5 and we will all be most appreciative. Slow down and enjoy your beautiful island.

Also, PLEASE note that the 7 1/2 MPH maximum speed limit is all the way from Nerita St. to Periwinkle Way and all park streets in between.

Thanks so much,
Periwinkle Park Management and Staff
With remote island getaways, big city beaches and family-friendly shores perfect for shelling and sandcastle

Top Picks

Delray Beach

Just north of Boca Raton in tony Palm Beach County, Delray Beach at Ocean and Atlantic Avenues is a charming village by the sea. Each year, nearly 1 million visitors flock to this family-friendly 2-mile-long beach ideal for sunbathing, swimming and sandcastle-building. When the sun goes down, visitors take a stroll on festive Atlantic Avenue, enjoying the boutiques, seafood restaurants, cool architecture and the Pineapple Grove Arts District. And if you’re looking for a worthwhile splurge, check into the Seagate Hotel and Spa on Atlantic Avenue just a short trolley ride to the beach and the private Seagate Beach Club.

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach's well-deserved reputation as one of America's finest beaches has lured countless families and couples to its broad, sandy shores and beachfront hotels. Spread along a narrow, 3-mile stretch of the Pinellas Peninsula on the Gulf Coast, Clearwater Beach straddles the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and tranquil Tampa Bay to the east. This location between the 2 waters, and Clearwater's proximity to Tampa, offer visitors ample activities like sunbathing on white sandy beaches, diving into a game of beach volleyball, renting fishing boats, taking a dolphin-watching cruise, parasailing or heading to a mainland museum or aquarium.

Naples

The biggest dilemma when chilling on the pearly white sands in Naples is to decide which way to look. On one side are the rolling waves, and on the other the gleaming mansions that make up Millionaires' Row. One of the most popular beaches at Naples Pier is in the city, on 12th Avenue South. Another great beach lies a few miles north of Old Naples, at the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park. This is a great place to spread out the family's beach blanket and camp out for the day as there are bathhouses and food stands on-site and rentals available for everything from umbrellas to kayaks to snorkeling gear.

Sanibel Beach

Sanibel is a unique barrier island with east-west orientation that differs from the typical north-south layout. This east-west designation has helped Sanibel earn its reputation as one of the Shell Islands—prime spots along Florida’s coastline for gathering perfectly intact shells in every shape and size. Hit the beach with a bucket, shovel and small net ,and stroll the beach at low tide to peruse the ocean’s bounty of conch, cockles and scallop shells. Bowman’s Beach is the quietest and most remote stretch of sand in Sanibel, while a historic lighthouse beckons visitors to take a stroll on the rustic boardwalk at Lighthouse Beach.

South Beach

South Beach is an international playground offering non-stop nightlife, sandy shores, unique architecture and plenty of eye candy. When imagining the South Beach scene, think "Baywatch" with an architectural twist ... even the lifeguard stands are art deco masterpieces. The long, man-made beach stretches up the Atlantic for miles and is perfect for early morning runs and topless sunbathing. And while it may not be the Caribbean, the water is as clean and clear as the Atlantic gets. The beach is also about the best spot to view the city lights at night before exploring the legendary club scene.

Siesta Key

With so much to see and do, it's almost impossible to lie idle on Siesta Key. Whether you curl your toes in it, run your fingers through it or bask on it, the allure of the island sand is contagious. Beach lovers flock to these silky shores to take advantage of the wide expanse of sand and the tranquil gulf waters. Siesta Key Beach is perfect for strolling, shell-collecting, or more active pursuits like renting a catamaran or kayak from one of the many beach concessionaires. This perfect family vacation venue, which boasts beachside picnic areas and playgrounds, is also home to candlelit restaurants and cozy rental cottages ideal for a romantic getaway.

Atlantic Beach

Relaxing is easy on Atlantic Beach: sand soft and white as sugar, brilliant sunshine and azure waters abound. And while Atlantic Beach has heaps of small-town charm, it’s also just a short drive from Jacksonville, making it convenient for day trippers and vacationers who want a short airport-to-beach commute. History buffs can learn about the development of Atlantic Beach and neighboring Jacksonville beaches at the area’s Beaches Museum and History Center. After spending the afternoon strolling the shores, head to Beaches Town Center’s pedestrian-friendly cobblestone streets and check out the town’s restaurants, galleries, boutiques and frequent special events like live music and the monthly North Beaches Art Walk held on the third Thursday of every month.

Key West

Paradise is located just off the coast of mainland Florida -- and it's called Key West. As Jimmy Buffet crooned, Key West is the original changer of latitudes and attitudes, and one weekend here proves he knew exactly what he was talking about. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is one of Florida's most beautiful spots, with wide stretches of sugary sand and tranquil waters. Visitors can rent snorkel gear or a 2-person glass-bottomed kayak from the concession area. Or stick to dry land and rent a bike to navigate the single bike path that winds beside the Key West shipping channel, around the fort, through a rocky secluded beach and countless picnic spots.

Palm Beach

It may have more than 47 miles of pristine beaches, but the crown jewel of Palm Beach County, FL, is, without a doubt, exclusive Palm Beach -- a 14-mile-long, half-mile-wide island of wealth and extravagance. Winter home to the Vanderbilts, the Kennedys, the Rockefellers and a slew of newly minted millionaires, Palm Beach features some of Florida's finest hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as some truly beautiful beaches. Perched next to the Gulf Stream, Palm Beach enjoys the benefit of warm blue water and gentle breezes. The John D. MacArthur State Park has a beautiful beach perfect for families as well as abundant marine life and rare plants to explore on a nature walk.

Captiva Island

Along with Sanibel, Captiva Island shares the distinction of being 1 of Florida’s Shell Islands. Captiva is generally the spot to find the larger of the intact shells. Turner Beach, though not good for swimming because of fast currents, is the perfect spot for a shell-hunting adventure. Just be sure to leave any live shells on the beach or risk breaking the state’s strict shelling laws. At sunset, head to Captiva Beach at the end of Captiva Drive to take in a spectacular sunset.

2010 Second Annual
SanCap Cracker Fest

Our Sanibel START chapter is hosting the Second Annual SanCap Cracker Fest on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 6:30 P.M. This event is a departure from traditional Sanibel functions. We are celebrating Sanibel’s rich and lively heritage with a wonderful Florida Cracker Dinner Fundraiser with Silent and Live Auctions. The evening will be elegantly casual, filled with down-home music by our local TROUBLESTARTERS. And we will serve a delicious dinner including smoked piney woods rooter and fried mullet with all the trimmings, finishing with mouth-watering desserts. And it wouldn’t be a party without select wine and beer on hand!

Our local Sanibel Captiva Chapter of START (Solutions to Avoid Red Tide, Inc.) is part of a statewide organization headquartered in Sarasota. You may visit the website at www.start1.com. START’s vision is to improve the quality of our marine waters through research, public education, and programs that restore marine habitats, preserve marine species, and promote healthy beaches and coastal waterways. This vision has never been more important.

When our START chapter determined to have a fundraiser last year, we resolved to keep the majority of the proceeds in Lee County and have succeeded in that mission. Our chapter president Dr. Bruce Neill (Executive Director, Sanibel Sea School) spearheaded collaborative efforts between START and Sanibel Sea School to create a tool to educate Lee County teachers and students about locally relevant coastal and marine issues. Called The Coastal Classroom, the computer module is a prototype designed specifically for 7th graders. This project could not have been produced without the generous help of our 2009 sponsors, donors, and event participants. A presentation of the Coastal Classroom will be made at this year’s Cracker Fest.

Our objective for the coming year is to develop other outreach programs to be underwritten with the proceeds from SanCap Cracker Fest 2010.

We hope that you will show your support of our organization in 2010 by attending our one-of-a-kind event. Tickets are available by presale only and limited to the first 300 RSVP guests. We anticipate a sold-out crowd again this year, so make your reservations now! You may send your check for $75 per person to SanCap START, P. O. Box 1511, Sanibel, Florida 33957.
